Exactly a 50/50 chance
A real coin isn’t quite perfect: depending on how it’s flipped, it lands slightly more often on the side it started on, according to researchers who flipped coins hundreds of thousands of times. The coin on this site picks heads or tails with the browser’s secure random generator: a true 50/50 chance, with no flipping technique and no weighted coin.
A running count of heads and tails
Every flip is added to this session’s history, with the total of heads and tails. It’s handy for a best of three or best of five: you can see at a glance who’s ahead. Nothing is saved: reload the page and you start from zero.
Why people accept what a coin says
Heads or tails settles a choice between two options that are equally good. Since nobody can predict the result, nobody can argue with it: that’s why referees use a coin toss to decide who kicks off or picks a side at the start of a game. For it to work, there’s just one rule: decide before the flip who takes heads and what happens if it’s tails.
A trick for when you can’t decide
Torn between two options? Flip the coin and notice your first reaction to the result. If you feel relieved, it was the right choice; if you feel disappointed, now you know what you really wanted.
Everyday coin flips
Who sits in the front seat, who does the dishes tonight, which friend’s place hosts game night, pizza or tacos: two choices, one flip, no debate. Put the phone on the table so everyone sees the coin land.
More than two options?
As soon as there are three choices or more, switch to spin the wheel or to the random name picker. To decide the order of a whole team, the random order generator is made for that. And so that no draw ever gets questioned, read our guide to fair random draws.
